Some might ask: What's so special about a fruit fly?
Fruit flies might seem like a nuisance, but if you are someone who believes that size matters...you’ll be impressed with lil’ guys. Although only 3mm in length, Drosophila bifurca, has the longest sperm in the Animal Kingdom measuring at 55mm (1000 times longer than a human sperm.) Each sperm is mostly tail tangled up in a mass. The swimmers are rather sluggish because of their size and so they are pushed up by the female reproductive tract. Making huge sperm is not easy! A single male Drosophila bifurca may only produce 100 sperm in his lifetime compared to the millions made by male humans each day. Sperm envy?
